Identifying and Treating Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is the most well-known diabetic-associated eye disease. This condition affects only diabetic patients. It is highly recommended that if you are diabetic, you have your eyes checked by your eye doctor at least once a year.

Waco Vision Center provides complete diagnosis and treatment services for various ocular diseases, including diabetic retinopathy. Call us to find out more about our services, or schedule an appointment today!

What Happens in Diabetic Retinopathy?

This condition occurs when the delicate blood vessel network supplying the retina begins to swell or leak. This leads to bleeding at the back of the eye, which hinders the transmission of clear images from the retina to the brain.

The retina is the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that helps us see. As the disease progresses, you can develop symptoms, such as seeing dark or black spots in your visual field, experiencing blurry vision, etc. With time, these symptoms will increase. So, don't delay. Reach out to our eye doctors today!

Who Is at Risk for Diabetic Retinopathy?

People having type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes are at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy. The risk is higher if you have had diabetes for a long time. Therefore, controlling your blood sugar becomes critical to preventing vision loss.

Treatment Options

The available treatment options for diabetic retinopathy include vitrectomy. In this process, the inner gel-like substance that supports the eyeball structure is replaced. Laser sugery is another option.
